Abstract and Scope
Abstract

The Index of African Governance is a project to measure and assess the quality of governance across Africa's fifty-three countries. It focuses on performance in five areas: Safety and Security; the Rule of Law, Transparency, and Corruption; Participation and Human Rights; Sustainable Economic Opportunity; and Human Development. Using 57 indicators, the Index offers a report card on performance in each country. The 2009 Index assesses the years 2000, 2002, 2005, 2006, and 2007.

Data are drawn from a variety of sources, including our own in-country research. The Index is updated annually and all data are back-updated to reflect the latest data available and to allow for comparisons over time.

The data set should be cited as follows:

Robert I. Rotberg and Rachel M. Gisselquist, "2009 Index of African Governance Data Set," downloaded from Murray Research Archive, hdl:1902.1/12705 [date]. This data set is described in Rotberg and Gisselquist, Strengthening African Governance: Index of African Governance -- Results and Rankings 2009 (Cambridge, MA: Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University; and World Peace Foundation, October 2009).
