The agency created and maintained this series to document the research activities of the U.S. Department of Agriculture state agricultural research system. The agency used the data for various reporting purposes, as well as to provide ready access to information that helped users keep abreast of the latest developments in agricultural and forestry research, plan future research activities, avoid costly duplication of research, and establish valuable contacts within the research community. This series contains information on publicly-supported agricultural, food and nutrition, and forestry research projects. The projects describe the work of U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) agencies, the State Agricultural Experiment Stations, the state land-grant colleges and universities, state schools of forestry, cooperating schools of veterinary medicine, and USDA grant recipients. Each record contains information on the agency conducting the project; the type and status of the project; the organization performing the project and their location; contact information; project start and termination dates; the subject, objectives, and approach of the project; a narrative of the project; project descriptors and classifications; a progress report and impact statement; and listings of any publications from the project.The subjects researched by these projects include: management and use of natural resources; crop and livestock protection; production management systems for crops, livestock, poultry, and fish; farm and forest product development and quality improvement; marketing of crop, animal, and forest products; foreign trade and market development; food and human nutrition, health and safety, and consumer protection; rural and community development; and fish and wildlife management, outdoor recreation, and environmental quality.
